Peaks Island Elementary School (PIES) is over 150 years old and has a wonderful history. As with all island schools, we have a strong connection to our community. Island schools are at the heart of island life and are essential in sustaining a year-round livable island community.
Our Peaks Island Elementary School provides district curriculum as well as opportunities to apply these learning opportunities using the island as our classroom. Our community of historians, scientists, artists and musicians connects with students in unique ways. Peaks collaborates with a variety of educational and artistic partners, both on and beyond the island. The Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Stage Company, Portland Ovations, the Children’s Museum and Theater of Maine, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Maine Audubon provide programs for our students. Every other week, our classes walk to the Peaks branch of the Portland Public Library. We also connect with residents of the island’s senior center, the Fay Garman House for special events, including our annual “PIES Love Parade” on Valentine’s Day.
