Principal’s Notes

January 22,  2018

Dear Peaks Island Families,

It was so great to have a full house of enthusiastic listeners at our Winter Concert on Tuesday night.  This week, I am excited to have a full week of school with no weather interruptions.

Math Team at Holiday Inn by the Bay, Tuesday, January 23, 8:15 ferry

Please send your good math vibes to Ms. Ellen Mahoney and our math team who will again represent Peaks Island School at the district math meet.  The following students will be participating:

Henry Wilson        Meleah Herrick         Pi Crosby       Calvin Foster      Chrisanne Keza   Sofie Asbjornsen

Parent University clinic, January 27th at Ocean Avenue School, 1-4 pm

One important piece of our district’s  Portland Promise is having parents as partners in our schools.  The kickoff for this work will be on Saturday.   To pique your curiosity, here are a few sentences describing this initiative from Supt. Botana :  “At Parent U’s kickoff event – on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Ocean Avenue Elementary School – Columbia University Professor Amy Stuart Wells will speak about how to create truly integrated public schools that prepare our children for life in today’s global society.  Portland Schools are uniquely positioned to achieve this as the most diverse district in Maine.”

I hope to see many of you there. I am pretty excited to hear Amy Stuart Wells present.  Supt Botana’s full Forecaster article in in the link below:

Chicken Care at PIES

We need your help.  Our four intrepid, heartier than the average chickens need your help.  If you spend a weekend here on island, please sign up for a weekend of chicken care duty on this google doc:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l7fyr6i5kw0tPRK_GjAyiFGaAmchIURus4_Cent3XmE/edit

Grade 5 teacher Kelly Mascolo and her students led a school wide exploration of the best model for a new coop. On Thursday, the whole school voted and put forward three possible models. Ms. Mascolo and parents Scott Kelley, Will Crosby, and Dustin Weise (our guest experts in  this project based work)  and I will meet this week to select the best model, determine needed materials, and create a schedule for the rebuild of the pen over the next few weeks. There is no way we could do this kind of meaningful work without community support.

Please find the ASA schedule for the next two weeks.  There are two new ASAs happening concurrently on Mondays.  Peaks Island parent and coach, Jamie Semon, will lead K-1 in basketball basics and dribbling fun.
